Burma’s government has agreed to grant passports to democracy activists who complained they had been denied passports despite applying months ago.
Activist Soe Tun said on Wednesday that police informed his political group that applications made by 16 members up to five to six months ago have been approved, said a report by the Associated Press. Normally, passports are granted within three weeks.
Three group members who received passports last week publicly protested the delay in their colleagues' cases.
The approval came two days after about 90 political prisoners were released in an amnesty. Rights groups believe several hundred remain imprisoned and many former political prisoners are unable to obtain passports.
