Addressing heads of state at the Asia-European Meeting (ASEM) in Vientiane on November 6, Burma’s President Thein Sein said that his first objective is to halve poverty and hunger in the country by 2015.

Speaking on the issue of agriculture and food sufficiency, he requested ASEM member countries “to assist Myanmar in its drive for poverty alleviation.”

Thein Sein said that as developed countries have suspended sanctions on Burma, the country will not only become food sufficient, but could provide regional and global countries in need of food with its surplus if it receives support.
