Chiang Mai — The junta has succeeded in pressurising a ceasefire group in Shan State to surrender.
The junta put immense pressure on the 'Shan Nationalities People's Liberation Organization' (SNPLO) to surrender at the end of July. At least 10 people have surrendered to the junta.
"Under intense pressure, some 10 to 20 members surrendered to the junta at 5 p.m. on August 3. But some still remain in the fold. We learnt that the junta told all the remaining forces to surrender by July 4," said Col. Khun Okkar of Pa-O People's Liberation Organization, who is closely monitoring the situation in this region.
More military reinforcements under the junta's Eastern Command have been deployed around the SNPLO HQ.
The SNPLO led by U Tarkele has about 60 personnel and had reached a ceasefire agreement with the junta in 1994.
