A fire broke out at a government high school in Rangoon's Mayangone Township on Monday night.

The fire burnt for nearly three hours, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. (local time), destroying the second floor of a two-storey school.

Though parts of the school have been damaged by the fire, school authorities continue to conduct examinations among primary and middle school students.

According to a local who resides next to the school, the fire started from an electrical wire shock and grew into a large fire when the school's night watchman failed to extinguish it at an early stage.

Firefighters arrived shortly after it was apparent the guard would not be able to handle the situation and struggled for nearly three hours to put out the fire, the local said.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The US is certainly doing the most for the opposition. There has been real success in training and forming an underground movement through religious organisations and monastic organisations. These provide the best cover inside Burma. The monks can spread their training very effectively."

Soe Aung, the chief spokesman for the National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB)
