New Delhi - Heightened security perceptions have made the Burmese military junta install Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) in downtown Rangoon on traffic lampposts and junctions at crowded places.
These cameras are being installed at crowded places in Rangoon such as the 8th mile junction, Anti-Fascist Resistance Park corner in U Wisara Road, and Sule-Ahnawrahta corner."We saw CCTV cameras being installed at about 10:30 p.m. yesterday at the 8th-mile-junction at about 30 feet above ground level. Previously we saw fixed angle cameras installed to monitor traffic and car accidents. These new cameras are multi-angle cameras unlike the previous ones," an eyewitness told Mizzima.
Local people think that the installation of new cameras at crowded places is in preparation for future protests against the junta. These cameras can provide them video recording of the protests and unrest.
The authorities removed all traffic monitoring CCTV security cameras installed previously as it could not afford the maintenance and running costs.
The junta authorities have issued circulars to all water festival mundap owners to install CCTV security cameras during the forthcoming water festival.
