New Delhi (Mizzima) – Dr. Than Nyein, a National League for Democracy Member of Parliament-elect from Kyauktan Township in Rangoon Division, underwent a liver operation in Singapore last week, one-and-a-half months after his release from prison.

Seventy-one years old, he was released from Pyae prison on September 23rd, after which he left for Singapore and had a liver operation at Singapore General Hospital.

"The lower part of the liver was cut off and he is fine at present. The doctor also said he was satisfied about the current situation. Now he is home and back from the hospital," a family member told Mizzima.

Dr. Than Nyein was one of 9,002 prisoners, and seven political prisoners, released on September 23rd by the junta.

He was arrested on October 28, 1997, and sentenced to seven years for helping to make possible a meeting between Daw Aung San Su Kyi and youth. However, he was not released when his original sentence expired.

Dr. Than Nyein was reassigned his original position in the party at the 20th year anniversary ceremony of the National League for Democracy on September 27 of this year, following his release from prison.
