Twins with shared-chest born in Northern Shan State

Ruili (Mizzima) - In a freak birth, a Kachin woman in northern Shan State delivered twins, connected to each other at the chest, on Monday. Bawk Mai (20) a villager in Mongpaw village in Muse district of Northern Shan State gave birth to the twin boys at the Mongpaw hospital and was brought immediately to Muse district hospital, a local resident in Muse said. "The mother and the twins were sent to Muse hospital today. But since it lacks proper medical equipments for surgery, they will be sent to another hospital," a local, who is close to hospital staff members, told Mizzima. A staff at the Muse district hospital confirmed that the mother and children were brought to the hospital on Wednesday but were later taken to the Lashio Hospital for surgery. The twins are the third instance of children to be born with a shared-chest in Burma. Earlier, in the 1970s twin girls named Nan Soe-Nan San were born with a similar shared chest but Nan San died during the operation to separate the two girls. But with the advancement in medical technology doctors in Burma successfully carried out an operation to separate twin girls, Aye Aye Nyien-Ei Ei Nyein, who were also born with a shared-chest in the late 1980s. < Prev   Next >
