Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – One person was killed and at least two others were injured in the bomb explosion in Rangoon on Thursday evening, local residents said.
The blast occurred in Tawwinnan guest house in Thudhama Street, North Okkalapa Township in Rangoon Division on Thursday at about 4:20 p.m. (local time).
“The explosion killed a man and injured two," a local, who lives near the blast site, told Mizzima.
A duty officer at the local Waybargi police station in North Okkalapa Township said the blast did take place but did not provide further details.
However, the junta run newspaper on Friday did not even mention the bomb explosion.
The dead and the injured were said to have been rushed to the emergency ward of Rangoon General Hospital.
Coincidentally or otherwise the explosion occurred on the eve of 64th Anti-Fascist Resistance Day, which falls on Friday. It also coincided with the official visit of Mr. Li Changchun, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Burma and delegates to Burma.
The local police cordoned off the blast site and beefed up security in and around the guest house and started a combing operation, sources said. They also took away bomb making accessories from the blast site.
Bomb blasts in Burma are a rarity but not uncommon. Earlier this month, two bomb explosions occurred within a span of one hour in Padoma Park in Sanchaung Township and Hledan bus stop in Kamayut Township. There were no casualties.
In 2008, several explosions were witnessed in Rangoon, Burma’s former capital and commercial hub.
