Win Tin joins supporters at Insein prison

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Despite suffering from ill-health, veteran journalist and prominent National League for Democracy (NLD) personality Win Tin on Friday arrived outside Insein prison as an expression of solidarity with party leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose trial has reached its final stages.   Win Tin, along with about 300 other supporters, on Friday waited outside Insein prison where the court is hearing the final arguments of lawyers from both sides. Win Tin arrived at Insein prison at about 1 p.m. and left around two (local time). “Lawyers went into the prison compound at about 2 p.m. (local time). There were about 300 supporters waiting outside. It might be more I am not sure. I think there were more people than other days, both old and young,” the 80-year old Win Tin told Mizzima by telephone. “As I have said time and again, this is a master-minded, trumped-up case, so we are calling for the withdrawal of the case and the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,” Win Tin elaborated. He added he was joined by several other members of the NLD, including Ye Htut, advocate Khin Maung Shein, Aung Thein, Member of Parliament elect Ohn Maung and women's activist Naw Ohn Hla. En route to Insein prison, Naw Ohn Hla and about ten of her friends were taken to Bayintnaung police station and briefly questioned before being allowed to join their fellow supporters. Authorities have blocked the Insein prison road with barbed wire barricades. < Prev   Next >
