Rangoon – The police force is busy making surprise raids on VCD rental shops across the country in search of the RAMBO 4 film VCDs. The regime banned the screening and possession of these VCDs in the country. This action movie has gun fights between Burmese Army troops and a Rambo led armed group. The film is very popular among the people in Burma and is being is circulated secretly. The police force is conducting search operations in the entire country to find and seize he VCDs. "They can come at any time any where if they get a tip off. They are mainly searching for Rambo 4, political VCDs and pornographic movies," said a video rental shop owner from Bago, about 50 miles northeast of Rangoon.
The concerned authorities including the Movie Association have warned all rental shops two weeks ago not to rent out Rambo VCDs in Bago. Similarly the police force in Myitkyinar in northern Burma is frequently searching for Rambo 4 VCDs in rental shops.
"The police have been conducting the operation for about three weeks in Myitkyinar. They frequently search but there has been no arrest and seizure from this operation," a local resident from Myitkyinar said. "Most of the local people have seen the movie. We had to buy these pirated CDs from small retail shops secretly. After seeing it, we had to throw it away," she added.
In Mandalay of central Burma too, the police intensified search operations to find the VCDs but the Rambo 4 movie VCDs were not circulating as much as it was earlier.
The movie stars actor Sylvester Stallone. In the film he plays the role of a Vietnam War veteran residing on the Thai-Burma border and rescues a group of Christian missionaries captured by the Burmese Army. The movie has been banned from being screened in Burma and many people downloaded the movie from the internet and circulated it among themselves.
In the film the Christian missionaries are arrested while they were distributing relief material to ethnic Karen people. The authorities in Burma are targeting the VCD because of its political content and theme besides the role of Rambo. But the 'Theelaythee' variety dance show VCDs and September saffron revolution VCDs are being distributed secretly despite the junta having banned them.
The Rambo 4 movie VCDs have been well circulated among the people in Rangoon. The authorities arrested Hlaing Township NLD-youth member Thant Zin and Tun Tun for watching the movie.
Similarly Tin Htay and Than Tun from Nyaungdon Town, Ayerwaddy Division were arrested in September last year after Thandar Shwe's wedding reception ceremony VCD was found in their possession. Thandar Shwe is the daughter of Snr. Gen. Than Shwe.
