Chiang Mai – The Burmese military junta authorities have deployed security personnel in large numbers near the National League for Democracy (NLD) party headquarters in Rangoon.

About 20 police vehicles and military trucks have been deployed with personnel in uniform near the NLD headquarters on Shwegongdaing Street, Bahan Township, Rangoon Division, where the 18th Anniversary of the Election Victory Day is being held today.

"Yes, the security cordon is significantly heavy today and near our party office, there are bout 20 military trucks," U Nyan Win, NLD party spokesperson, said.

Similarly riot police, USDA members and Swanahshin are deployed near the residence of NLD party leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on University Avenue and Shwegondaing traffic light in groups of two to three members.

Coincidentally, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi completes five years under house arrest today and the party will issue a special announcement today. It is believed to include a review of the SPDC's constitutional referendum held recently.

The ceremony which observes the 1990 general election victory day was held at Shwegondaing Party headquarters at about 2 p.m. today. It was attended by ethnic political party leaders besides NLD party members.

The party offered alms food to monks this morning in memory of cyclone victims who perished.

"We celebrate this day as our party was elected by the people who gave their mandate on this day. This ceremony is full of political essence for the democracy-loving people," Ko Nay Chi Win, In-charge of NLD Youth Information Department, said.

Though the NLD posted a landslide victory in 1990 general elections winning over 80 per cent seats, the regime still refuses to transfer power.
