Over 30 members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) from Mandalay Division, Burma have been arrested in the wake of the nationwide protests.

Mandalay Division NLD sources confirmed the arrest of six members of the party's Divisional Organization Committee and 25 members of the Township Committee of whom five are women.

The last victim of the crackdown was U Kan Tun, Secretary of Mandalay Division Organizing Committee. The authorities picked him up from his home on October 6 at about 11:30 p.m.

"Officials came to our home in a car and told my father, ' uncle, please come with us for a while', his son U Kyaw Kyaw Myint told Mizzima.

Security agencies, including troops of the Burma Army are deployed around major monasteries in Mandalay like the Myataung, Masoyane, and Phayargyi since mid-September.

Local residents believe that the authorities are still concerned about the movement of Sanghas (monks) and that is the reason it has not withdrawn security personnel from the monasteries.
