Rangoon (Mizzima) – Myanmar National League’s Disciplinary Committee has fined Yadanarbon FC 300,000 kyat (US$ 344), for fan hooliganism. During a football match on Aug. 19 between Yadanarbon FC and Zayar Shwe Myay FC, the Yadanarbon FC’s fans threw stones and drinking bottles onto the pitch.
At 58 minutes into the football match at the Ba Htoo Stadium in Mandalay Region, fans thought that Zayar Shwe Myay FC’s players had committed fouls, so they started throwing stones and bottles onto the pitch, said Thein Than Toe, a Yadanarbon FC media official.
“When Zayar Shwe Myay was losing, its players played rough. So our fans got angry. Not many people did it. Just a group of more than ten people did it,” Thein Than Toe said. Because of hooliganism, the match was stopped for about two minutes.
On August 30, the Myanmar National League’s Disciplinary Committee summoned officials of Yadanarbon FC to discuss the event, watched a video of the incident and then took the action. The committee also gave Yadanarbon FC a warning about hooliganism.
Similarly, during games between Yadanarbon FC and Zayar Shwe Myay in 2009 and 2010, some fans threw things onto the pitch. As of 2010, the pitches of Ba Htoo Stadium and Thuwunna Stadium have been protected with nets.
Although Yadanarbon FC has the right to play its next games without fans, the team will not ban people from the stadium.
“In the Burmese soccer community, we need to educate fans in order that they value soccer matches more and become better citizens. We don’t have any plan to take action against the fans. Even if the fans do it again and [Yadanarbon FC] is fined in other games, we will not punish the fans,” Thein Than Toe told Mizzima.
