Local army chief ‘demands money from missionaries’

A Baptist missionary tour that did not have a township administrator’s letter of recommendation was allegedly asked for K200,000 [US$200] by a Myanmar army commander in Ta-Pauk-Kan Village, Paletwa Township, Chin State recently, according to Burma News International on February 27.
Preacher U Hway Kyaing alleges the money was demanded by the commander of the battalion stationed in Kha-Wel Village on February 17.
He told BNI that normally they don’t have a recommendation letter from the township administrator. In the end, they paid K160,000. The 10-person team plan to obtain a letter from the township for their next tour.
