Authorities in Myanmar have investigated human trafficking cases involving a record six child victims in June, police said Tuesday according to a report in the Global New Light of Myanmar on 8 July.
Three of the victims were “females aged between 13 and 16, from Yangon, Mandalay and Sagaing regions, as well as Kayin and Kachin states” who were trafficked overseas for marriage or labour. The other three were forced to work asprostitutes in Myanmar.
Police were able to rescue all of the victims except one girl who was sold as a bride in China, Police Capt Min Naingof the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division was reported as saying.
Sixty-six trafficking cases have been recorded between January and June this year. Sixteen cases occurred in Shan State, while Mandalay, Yangon and Kachin were the next highest.
A total of 1,189 trafficking cases have been investigated nationwide between 2006 and June this year, with police rescuing more than 2,000 victims and arresting 2,144 traffickers, according to the official figures
