Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd. and Education Index Management (EIM) have announced that they intend to open an international school, the British College Yangon, in Thanlyin Star City, according to a press release.
The opening is planned for the 2016/2017 academic year and will provide a British curriculum enhanced for Myanmar and foreign students from two to eighteen years of age.
Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd. (“Yoma Strategic”, together with its subsidiaries, the “Group”) will develop the school buildings and facilities which will be leased to the school. Academic and operational management of the school will be overseen by EIM’s subsidiary Dulwich College International (“DCI”) with Dulwich College, London, supporting it as educational adviser.
The campus is located on 8.3 hectares of land within Star City. The school buildings and facilities will provide a fully equipped and purpose built campus dedicated to upholding the highest international educational standards. The school aims to be a best-in-class educational facility in Myanmar, offering modern state-of-the-art classrooms, a performing arts centre, swimming pool, gymnasiums and sporting grounds.
Mr. Fraser White, Founder and Executive Chairman of EIM noted, “The British College Yangon campus facilities will stand as testament to our [Yoma Strategic’s and EIM’s] shared vision of developing a world-class international education in Myanmar, and will offer exceptional prospects for the Myanmar and foreign students who will use them.”
The total development cost for the international school (excluding the cost of the land development rights) is expected to be approximately US$40 million on completion, subject to finalisation of design and quantity surveys.
To date, the school has received the required construction approvals and is recognised by the Union of Myanmar Ministry of Education. Construction has already begun on the school.
The campus facilities will be made available to Star City’s residents during out-of-school hours. In addition, British College Yangon will develop activity and training programmes for the benefit of the wider local community, to express DCI’s ethos of deep and wide engagement with local communities wherever a school is located.
Mr. Serge Pun, Executive Chairman of Yoma Strategic said, “We are delighted to work with EIM to provide high-quality educational facilities for Star City residents and the international community who consider Myanmar their home. The international school is essential to the master planning of Star City and will serve as a focal point for developing the international community of residents in Star City upon completion.”
