Myanmar Parliament Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann is due to arrive in the United States on Thursday at the invitation of the US House speaker John Boehner and will meet with members of Congress, reports the Associated Press on April 30.
The State Department says that Myanmar parliament speaker Thura U Shwe Mann will discuss democratic reforms with the No. 2 U.S. diplomat next week during a visit to Washington.
He will address the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank this Friday and will meet Monday with Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
Myanmar is gearing up for national elections in November, a landmark in its bumpy transition from five decades of direct military rule.
Thura U Shwe Mann, a potential contender for the presidency, is a former top general and junta member, and now a leading member of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party.
