The Miss Singapore 2015 crown was awarded to 24-year-old Charity Maru last week, but she has come under attack from some netizens because she’s originally from Myanmar, according to a Yahoo News report October 25.
Maru, also known as Charity Lu Lu Seng, received her Singapore registration in 2007 and is a freelance translator who comes from a Kachin family.
At her crowning on October 21, Maru told Yahoo Singapore, “I’m a minority here. I’m a Kachin, that means I came from the Kachin State from the northern part of Myanmar.
She said Singapore had given her this opportunity and trusted her with this responsibility so she was grateful for it.
Some critics have taken to social media and the official Miss World Singapore Facebook page to criticize why a locally-born woman cannot represent the country in the finals in Sanya, China in December. Despite the critics, many people have expressed support and best wishes in the upcoming finals.
