Students at the Yangon Technological University (YTU) in Myanmar were recently given access to the extensive library of economic reports on emerging markets produced by the global publishing, research and consultancy firm Oxford Business Group (OBG) according to a media release on 7 September.
Under the agreement, which forms part of OBG’s worldwide Academic Programme, students at the university were provided with read-only access to OBG’s country reports, alongside over 25,000 searchable articles produced first-hand by the Group’s team. OBG’s reports analyse trends and developments across the economic sectors, including banking, energy, industry, infrastructure, telecoms, education, health and real estate. The initiative was undertaken in partnership with the Shwe Taung Group, who has also lent its support to the university by donating a six-storey building that now houses YTU’s human resource development centre.
Welcoming the agreement, YTU’s Rector, Professor Aye Myint, said he was confident that the university’s students would benefit considerably from the opportunity to draw on OBG’s data and analysis. “Yangon Technological University attaches huge importance to research,” he said. “Free access to Oxford Business Group’s extensive library covering emerging countries means our students are now in a position to thrive.”
U Aik Htun, Chairman, Shwe Taung Group, added that an increasingly global economy, coupled with fast-approaching regional integration, meant education was now high on the agenda for much of Myanmar’s younger generation. “With the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community nearing, Myanmar’s students will soon be able to capitalise on the free flow of labour,” he said. “Initiatives like these taken by Oxford Business Group will bolster their knowledge of the region.”
Michael Nesbitt, OBG’s Editorial Manager, described the initiative as timely, given Myanmar’s current drive to strengthen its education sector. “The number of emerging markets in which students and academics are using Oxford Business Group’s articles as a key source for their work is growing and I’m delighted that we can now add Myanmar to that list,” he said. “We look forward to supporting Myanmar’s bid to put education at the forefront of its development by sharing our business intelligence with the YTU’s staff and students, many of whom will be playing a key role in shaping the country’s future.”
