Twinings tea comes to Myanmar
Stephen Twining

Stephen Twining, tenth generation member of the famous tea family, was in Yangon for Twinings’ 310th anniversary and the official launch of Twinings tea in Myanmar, according to a recent statement. The 116th market for Twinings globally, Myanmar is one of the world’s fastest growing consumer markets with a large tea-drinking population.
Stephen has been involved in the family business for more than three decades. He has travelled extensively to places like Sri Lanka and India where he experienced first hand the picking and buying of the finest teas. A man who drinks at least nine cups of tea a day, Stephen spends most of his time educating people around the world about tea and Twinings, and the fascinating tea industry.
“Tea is well-loved in Myanmar so it makes absolute sense for Twinings to be here. I am delighted to experience Myanmar’s unique culture and our shared passion for tea,” Stephen said.
“Twinings never accepts anything less than perfect. Since 1706, Twinings has been committed to producing the finest teas and making them accessible to all. Today, Twinings tea is enjoyed by millions in 116 countries worldwide including Myanmar,” he added.
In the early 18th century in England, only rich people and aristocrats could drink tea as it was very expensive. Thanks to the effort of Richard Twining, grandson of Twinings founder Thomas Twining, the Commutation Law – which reduced the high taxes on tea – was passed, making tea affordable and available to everyone.
Twinings is now available in Myanmar through a partnership between AB Food & Beverages, the company behind Twinings, and Premium Distribution Co. Ltd. Twinings is sold at City Mart supermarkets and gourmet stores in major cities and destinations including Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Bagan, Taunggyi, Inle, Ngapali and Mawlamyaing. It is also served at some of the country’s top restaurants and hotels such as NOVOTEL Yangon Max, The Strand, and Chatrium.
There are over 600 blends of Twinings tea and infusions. The most popular ones available in Myanmar are Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Jasmine Green Tea, Pure Camomile and Pure Peppermint.
“We are pleased to formally announce the launch of Twinings in Myanmar and our partnership with AB Food & Beverages. As Myanmar opens up and the economy grows, we expect an increasing demand for the finest quality tea. Twinings is the number 1 premium tea brand worldwide and is well-positioned to cater to this,” said Jonathan Lam, Category Business Manager for Premium Distribution.
Tea is the second most consumed beverage after water. Around the world, some 2 billion people drink tea daily. In 2016, the global tea beverage market is estimated to be worth well over US$38 billion.
