Nepalese citizens appeal for support for Myanmar’s democracy movement

A group of Nepalese people are calling on the Nepalese government to reach out to the Myanmar junta to reverse its takeover and abide by the results of the November 2020 elections.

There following is their statement, released on 28 March:

We undersigned citizens of Nepal are proud of the Myanmar people’s valorous stand for democracy, appalled by the murderous suppression by the Tatmadaw military, and distressed by the lack of adequate response from the governments of South Asia and globally.

Four shot dead as Bangladesh demo against Modi turns violent

Four supporters of a hardline Islamist group were shot dead in Bangladesh on Friday in violent demonstrations over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tour to Dhaka, officials said.

 

It comes as Bangladesh marks 50 years of independence from Pakistan with celebrations focused on its economic achievements, which activist groups say have been overshadowed by rights abuses.

 

UK denounces China sanctions over Xinjiang as Western rift widens

Britain accused China of "gross human rights violations" against the Muslim Uyghur minority Friday after Beijing slapped sanctions on UK lawmakers and lobby groups, widening a rift with Western powers over alleged abuses in Xinjiang.

 

At least one million Uyghurs and people from other mostly Muslim groups have been held in camps in northwestern Xinjiang, according to rights groups, who accuse authorities of forcibly sterilising women and imposing forced labour.

Myanmar’s CDM movement nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

A group of six professors in social science at the University of Oslo in Norway has nominated the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) of Myanmar for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

Mizzima spoke with the spokesperson for the professors, Kristian Stokke, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oslo. 

Stokke said he had been researching questions of popular movements and democratization for 25 to 30 years.

KNU calls on Military junta to ‘withdraw from politics'

The Karen National Union (KNU) has called on the Myanmar Military junta to withdraw from taking part in politics.

The KNU, a key ethnic rebel group, released a letter Friday addressed to junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing, acknowledging an invitation from the regime to meet.

"The KNU finds it completely unacceptable that police and (the military), whose responsibilities are to protect and defend its own people, have killed, attacked, and threatened peaceful protesters," said the letter, dated March 22.

‘Over 100 civilians dead’ as Myanmar Military sends message to protesters on Armed Forces Day

Media assessment of the carnage committed by Myanmar security forces indicate that possibly more than 100 people may have been killed on Armed Forces Day.

Security forces shot at protesters in many areas of the country on the day when the military held their parade for the 76th anniversary of Armed Forces Day in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday.
