Myanmar military crackdown death toll passes 600

A Myanmar human rights group says more than 600 people have been killed in the military crackdown since the coup on February 1.

The rights group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, says more than 20 people were killed on Wednesday alone, and that the death toll stood at 614 as of Thursday.

The military has arrested celebrities, accusing them of inciting protests.

Demonstrators continued to take to the streets on Thursday across the country, including in the largest city of Yangon and the southern city of Dawei.

Ambassadors to Myanmar jointly issue strongest statement to date

In a statement released today, Ambassadors to Myanmar from Australia; Canada, EU, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden; New Zealand; Norway; Korea; Switzerland; United Kingdom and the United States, decried the deaths of over 600 civilians while protesting for “hard-won democratic rights and freedoms.”

ASEAN civil society shows strong support for Myanmar democracy

ASEAN must take urgent action commensurate with the demands of the deteriorating situation in Myanmar said ASEAN civil society groups and affiliated institutions on Thursday.

Representatives from 225 groups met virtually to agree on a declaration at a Southeast Asian people-to-people Region Hall hosted by Dino Patti Djalal, chairman of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), and Jose Ramos-Horta, former Timor-Leste president.

US targets Myanmar gem company, seeking to deprive funding

The United States on Thursday slapped sanctions on Myanmar's state gem company, vowing to deprive the military junta of a key moneymaker as it violently suppresses democracy protests.

The Treasury Department said it would block all assets and ban any transactions with the Myanmar Gems Enterprise, which manages the mining and marketing of the country's jade and other gemstones.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States was determined alongside allies to restore democracy and promote accountability in the country formerly known as Burma.

UN envoy to Myanmar still barred from visit during Asia tour

The UN envoy to Myanmar is expected to begin a tour of Asia in the coming days but is still barred from visiting the Southeast Asian nation, in turmoil after a military coup, a spokesman said Thursday.

Christine Schraner Burgener will start her trip in Thailand and will also visit China, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, but did not give details on dates and any other country that might be on the agenda.

Britain slams 'bullying' Myanmar over London embassy standoff

Britain on Thursday condemned "bullying" by the Myanmar junta after the country's ambassador to London was ousted in an extraordinary diplomatic coup having called for the release of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Diplomats loyal to the Myanmar military authorities seized control of the embassy on Wednesday, leaving ambassador Kyaw Zwar Minn locked out in the street.

Myanmar actor arrested as junta hunts 120 celebrities

A leading Myanmar actor, singer and model who has backed the country's anti-coup protests was arrested on Thursday, his sister said, as the junta hunts more than 100 celebrities for supporting the movement.

The country has been rocked by daily protests since the military seized power on February 1, and the authorities have launched a bloody crackdown on dissent, with hundreds killed and more than 2,500 arrested.
