Background
The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) is the militant wing of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Organization (DKBO). In 1994, the DKBO splintered off from the Karen National Union (KNU) for religious reasons as the ruling hierarchy of the KNU was entirely Christian. When the DKBO split from the KNU, the ruling Burmese Junta, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), immediately took the opportunity to form an alliance with the DKBO. At present the DKBO, and their military wing, the DKBA, are funded by the SPDC.
