Background

| General Saw Maung (1924-1997) served as President and Chairman of the SLORC after heading the military coup in 1988. He resigned in 1992 due to health reasons, although it was rumoured that he had suffered a nervous breakdown. Prior to the coup, Saw Maung was a high ranking member of the BSPP and a protege of General Ne Win. He had formerly held the positions of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister; and at the time of the coup he was serving as Burma's Defense Minister |
