Background
The All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP) aims to represent Mon State and other ethnic minority groups living in Mon-controlled regions. AMRDP is the only Mon political group taking part in the impending elections legally. The party hopes to increase the political and cultural rights accorded to ethnic minorities, and to aid Burma’s transformation into a democratic state. It also says that it would demand a free-market economy and industrial development with foreign investment.

The AMRDP was officially named and founded during an April 7, 2010 meeting and the party name was approved by the Burmese government on May 24th. The party also elected two leaders and picked a party flag and symbols that they submitted to the Myanmar Union Election Commission on May 10.

Party leader Nai Ngwe Thein is seventy-one years-old and is from from Htone Eine village in Karen State. He is a well-known song writer and retired Assistant Education Officer of Mon State, Education Officer in Pegu Division and Kachin State, and Director of Upper Burma Basic Education Department. The party also includes Veterinary Doctor Nai Hla Aung and other retired government officers of the education, health and law departments.

AMRDP said it will nominate 42 candidates in Mon State and 13 in Pago, Taninthayi Divisions and Karen State.
