Background

The Democratic Party (DP) was originally created in 1988 and ran in the 1990 general election; it was reformed before registering for elections by the same Chairman, Veteran Politician Thu Wai. The party has 17 Central Executive members and 10 Central committee workers. Three of the senior members of the party include three daughters of past political leaders of Burma: Mya Than Than Nu, the daughter of Burma's first prime minister, U Nu; Nay Yee Ba Swe, whose father was the late Prime Minister Ba Swe; and Cho Cho Kyaw Nyein, the daughter of late Deputy Prime Minister Kyaw Nyein. The party is expected to contain some leading businessmen as well as former student activists.

The party believes that the dignity of each individual man and woman forms the basis of a democratic society. It promotes and protects peace, equality, individual freedom, responsibility and human dignity for all citizens of Burma. It also believes that meaningful participation of all individuals in the public policy making process are necessary to create a prosperous and just society.

Members of the party started doing door-to-door campaigns in Rangoon and plan to undertake similar organizational tours to townships in Irrawaddy Division namely Pyapon, Bogale, Dedeye, Mandalay, Myingyan, Hmawbi, Taikgyi, Kyaik Latt after the election law and regulation are enacted and promulgated.

Statements
5 Oct 2010: Chairman of Democratic Party (Myanmar) U Thu Wai said the party did not participate in the democratic alliance meeting held on October 2nd because the party's main contender NDF is a member. He added that "We want to contest separately in the election. However, we may form coalition with other parties after the election".

22 Aug 2010
Thu Wai: the political party backed by the ruling military junta will easily win the most seats because challengers face financial difficulties and other handicaps.

Thu Wai urged citizens not to vote for the USDP as its transformation from a government social organisation into a political party is unfair.

Thu Wai "If we were in power after the elections, we would propose rewriting the laws and regulations that are contradictory to democracy. The most important thing is: first we must be in power."

Most of the 47 candidates submitted by the Democratic Party (Myanmar) will contest seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house)

U Thu Wai: "there are candidates who are willing to contest in the election but the party doesn't have money to support them. Therefore, the number of our candidate contesting in the election is a lot less than expected."
