Background
The Kaman National Progressive Party was formed by Kaman patriots in Rangoon with the aim of promoting the development of Arakan and the Kaman people. The central executive committee is comprised of retired government officers and private businessmen. The Kaman is one of seven Rakhine tribes and the people primarily practice Islam.
The party aims to improve the situation of human rights for all ethnic minorities and work for all citizens to get equal rights in accordance with the constitution. The party opposes extremist ideology and will adopt neutral international policies. It will also work together with all nationalities and political parties that comply with the following principles: non-disintegration of the union, non-disintegration of national solidarity, perpetuation of sovereignty and respects Human Rights.
KNPP is willing to work with any political party that had the same objectives and political philosophy. The party will contest mainly in the Sittwe, Kyaukphyu and Thandwe districts in Arakan State, where the highest proportion of Kaman people live. There is an estimated 300,000 Kaman in the country, with around 500 Kaman families live in Rangoon.
In the 1990 election, the Kaman National League for Democracy (KNLD) contested in the election and won one seat in the People’s Parliament.
