Background

| Aung San Suu Kyi is the detained leader of the NLD party which won the general elections of 1990 and hence elected prime minister of Burma. She is considered the representative of the democratic opposition in Burma and continues to serve as the General Secretary of the NLD. Her political career began by chance when she returned to Burma during the 1988 uprisings to take care of her ailing mother. Aung San Suu Kyi is well known for being the daughter of the independence hero of Burma General Aung San and her mother was a prominent political figure after independence and was Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960. She has lived abroad for much of her life after leaving Burma at the age of 15 and returning in 1988, spending 14 years out of the past 20 years under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi has won several renowned international peace awards, notably the Nobel Peace prize and continues to have strong support and recognition from the international community. |
