Security Threats

The Burmese regime has faced several serious threats to national peace and security, and in this sensitive election year tensions are mounting. The biggest security threat is an outbreak of a large scale civil war as powerful ceasefire groups have been resisting the military regime's plans to join the centralised border guard force under control of the Burmese Army. The deep seated hatred that people have towards the SLORC/SPDC regime's harsh and ineffective rule has given rise to extremist terrorist groups and sporadic protests. The effect of a major security threat could derail the government's plans to hold elections this year.
