23 illegal Myanmar migrants arrested in Ranong, Thailand

23 Myanmar migrant workers, some of whom were with their children, were detained in Ranong Province on the border with Myanmar by the Thai Army’s No. 25 Infantry Battalion Special Force on 20 September.

According to No. 25 Infantry Battalion Special Force, the Myanmar nationals were arrested near Nakha village in Ranong District without the proper documents required for them to work legally in Thailand.

According to a Ranong-based Thai news agency the 23 Myanmar nationals had been taken in by a job scam and had paid 22,000 baht each for a job in Thailand before being smuggled into the country.

The Thai authorities have said that they intend to pursue legal action against the Myanmar nationals and their Thai driver who brought them into Thailand, according to a Thai news source.
