ASEAN, EU invite Myanmar youth to express their thoughts on climate change issues

The European Union continues to emerge as the world’s climate trailblazer. Every year in the lead up to the Conference of the Parties (COP27), EU delegations and embassies of EU Member States around the world hold various events to foster dialogue and cooperation on climate change, showcase success stories, and inspire further action. This year, the EU delegation to ASEAN is preparing a series of events to be held from 25 to 31 October 2022 as part of the Climate Diplomacy Week.

The week opened with a Climate Diplomacy Fair in the Philippines with PechaKucha talks from six environmental youth leaders, followed with school campaigns on protecting biodiversity in Viet Nam. In Myanmar, as part of the EU-ASEAN Climate Diplomacy week and Urban October, UN-Habitat and the EU Delegation in Myanmar invite young photographers from Myanmar aged 15-24 to participate in a Photo Competition to share their views under the theme of Youth and Climate Action. The competition starts on 31 October 2022 and will end on 30 November 2022.

Young people not only have a large role to play in mitigating the impacts of climate change, but also possess the potential to become key changemakers, both for their neighbourhoods and for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more broadly, in which the United Nations encourage people to act local with a global impact. By encouraging youth to share their perspectives on climate change, youth are encouraged to start taking the first steps to achieve urban sustainability and climate resilience objectives.

In this Photo Competition: Youth and Climate Action, submissions can be used to highlight ways in which youth are involved in economic, social, cultural, or environmental action related to climate change. Submissions will be reviewed by 3 judges representing UN-Habitat, the EU delegation to Myanmar, and a local NGO. Meanwhile, photos will be evaluated based on: adherence to the theme; image quality; and overall composition and skill. Judges will select 10 finalists and three competition winners. Winning submissions will receive cash prizes of 150,000 MMK for the 1st winner; 100,000 MMK for the 2nd place, 75,000 MMK for the 3rd place, and 50,000 MMK each for the seven finalists. Photos from the winners will also be featured on the UN-Habitat Myanmar website (www.unhabitat.org.mm) and the microsite of the EU Delegation to ASEAN (www.euinasean.eu)

Guidelines:

  1. Submissions must be emailed to: [email protected] by 23:59 on 30 November 2022 (Myanmar time)
  2. The submission must be accompanied by a filled version of the submission form (http://bitly.ws/v9gT)
  3. Only one (1) submission will be accepted per entrant
  4. Photos must be submitted as a digital copy in RAW, JPEG, or JPG format
  5. Photos must have a required minimum size of 5MB and maximum of 20MB
  6. Photos must have minimal to no manipulation

Creative Content Competition

The EU Delegation in ASEAN also organises a social media competition inviting ASEAN youth to express their thoughts on climate change issues or portray the climate actions around them through photos or short videos. Some examples have been posted by the organising committee on Instagram @euinasean to inspire youth to make their own creative content. Youth can create more than one content and post it on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, then mention and tag @euinasean and use the hashtags #EUinASEAN and #CDW2022. The competition will end on October 31st, 2022, and three best winners will be chosen based on the number of engagements and will receive wireless earphones as their prizes.
