The Chin Defence Force - Hakha issued a statement on the evening of August 1, stating that false information had been spread concerning the arrest of a priest and a layperson in Surkhao township.

The CDF-Hakha had arrested a priest and a pastor severing in Surkhua, Hakha Township for allegedly liaising with a military council member on July 26. CDF- Hakha said that care was arranged for the two and the arrest was not due to religious extremism.

The statement alleged the priest not only reported to the Military, but also set up his own company to assist Military businesses as Managing Director. In addition, The CDF’s statement alleged that he went to welcome soldiers of the 305th Light Infantry Division (Ka Tha Regiment) on July 1.

The statement continued; the priest will be released after a pledge that the priest be relocated to Hakha signed by two elders of the respective church.

The Hakha Diocese had issued a letter on August 1, demanding the release of the priest and layperson arrested by the CDF.
