The police, township administrators and soldiers checked homes in several Yangon townships on 13 and 14 June to check that the overnight guests had been properly registered as required by the Overnight Guest Registration law.

The law, originally bought in under British colonial rule in 1907 and modified by the Military government in 2012 requires that overnight visitors to homes register with local officials. The law was abolished under the National League for Democracy (NLD) government but revived following the military coup in 2021. Residents who do not correctly report guests face a fine or imprisonment.

A resident of Tamwe Township said: “They [the authorities] came with many men and searched random houses on their lists. Some civilians were arrested and taken to the ward administrative office. The situation is really bad.”
