Education Colleges and Universities Student Unions demand action against Basic Education DG

The Education Universities and Education Colleges Student Unions demanded action against Basic Education Department Director-General Ko Lay Win for saying improper words incompatible to his position as a department head.

Yangon Education University Students’ Union Chairman Naung Htet Aung said, “He didn’t respond to Bago Region government chief minister for his words on education department staff. Another is what he said regarding disabilities in 2018. There was a disabled teacher. She gave her volunteer service at school though she was a disabled person. The policy is a disabled person can be a teacher but he said that he would not take a disabled person at his office even for clerical staff.”

Yangon Education University Students’ Union, Sagaing Education University Students’ Union, Committee representing Education Colleges Students’ Union jointly issued a statement dated November 18 which called for an apology by the DG to the teachers concerned and demanded the responsible government minister to take appropriate action against this DG for making a one-sided accusation against students and unions in the presence of rectors and principals in order to create misunderstanding and, for failing to defend his subordinate teaching staffs as a department head, ignoring insults regarding education staffs and for openly discriminating against disabled persons.

Mizzima contacted the Basic Education Department Director-General to comment on the statement but received no reply.
