Five Myanmar citizens arrested in India’s Manipur state

Five Myanmar citizens have been arrested in Manipur state, India and will be charged under the Foreigners Act, according to Mizoram News online media.

On 9 August, five Myanmar citizens were arrested because they could not show proof of any legal residency in the house where they were living, according to the report.

"They were sent to court in Manipur. They are said to be kept at the police station for four days, and then a court judge’s order will be handed down," said a Myanmar citizen who lives in Manipur.

Five Myanmar people are being detained at the Churachandpur district police station and will be charged under the Foreigners Act.

On 28 June, the Karam Pura district police went door to door searching and a total of 80 people, including 25 men, 35 women and 20 children were arrested.

A total of 80 Myanmar people have been detained in Imphal prison. Twenty-five men have been sentenced to five months in prison and fined 1,000 rupees, while the women have not been judged and the trials continue.

Since the Myanmar military coup in 2021, the number of Myanmar nationals fleeing to India has increased.
