Injured young Myanmar activist arrested in shootout in Bago dies at hospital

A young man who was arrested in a shootout in Hinthar Gone ward, Bago township died at the hospital on Friday afternoon.

While the Myanmar junta troops tried to arrest Si Thu Kaung Myat, 25-year-old, at his home on September 23, Si Thu shot at the police from the upper floor of his house. A policeman was wounded and he also was shot three times in the shootout.

Si Thu’s mother was also arrested during the incident. In some cases, the junta’s troops often hold relatives hostages including children when they cannot arrest the person they want.

“The young man has died. He was interrogated several times before his death at the hospital. His mother has not been released yet,” a source close to the family said.

After the arrest of Si Thu Kaung Myat, CCTV cameras were installed in the house and the house was sealed off.

On Friday, a young man from Kali village in Bago Township was also arrested by the military after they entered his house.

According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), a total of 6,784 political prisoners are being detained in prisons across Myanmar.
