Two youths who did not stop their motorcycles were shot at by Military Council soldiers, one of whom died, in Mandalay’s, Chan Mya Thar Si Township on the night of 15 March.

The youths were identified as 20-year-old Nu Nu Win from Amarachani East Ward, in Mandalay’s Aung Myay Thar San Township who was shot in the neck and died on the spot and Aung Phyo Kyaw, was shot in the chest but survived.

They were shot at while returning from buying snacks on the corner of 12th and 80th Streets, according to locals.

“It was around 8 p.m., the two youths were coming back home after shopping for snacks. They came across a group of junta soldiers and turned their motorcycles around and fled because they were afraid of the soldiers. The soldiers chased after them and shot them. The girl was shot in the neck and died on the spot. The boy was also shot”, said a resident who lives near the incident.

“Civilians' lives are no longer safe. Even going out to the shops at the top of the road [is dangerous]. We are afraid of these evil, dangerous soldiers. It happened [the shooting] just after 8 o’clock, not at midnight and it wasn’t at a deserted place”, commented a local writer.

Last February, four youths were killed when junta’s armed soldiers chased and shot at a group of motorcyclists who did not stop at a road block in Mandalay Division.
