The Myanmar junta says it is working with China to produce a COVID-19 vaccine domestically in January 2022, according to state media.

According to the report, the junta hopes to produce 5 million units per month.

Junta leaders says that although the Omicron virus variant has not yet been detected in the country, the government is taking steps to prevent another wave of infection.

So far 18 million people have received two doses of the vaccine, while 5 million have received one dose.

Reported COVID-19 deaths spiked in August with a total of over 390 per day to drop to around seven per day as of this week.
