The National Unity Government (NUG) will set up a Cyclone Mocha emergency response fund of US$1 million, according to the NUG’s official website.

NUG’s Commission for Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Response held a meeting at 8:30 am today 13 May and decided that it will form the Emergency Operations Coordination Committee [EOCC] and set up the cyclone relief fund of US$1 million.

The meeting also decided that the EEOC's research and development team will work also for obtaining international assistance for the cyclone victims and issuing NUG policy statements.

NUG’s Acting President Duwa Lashi La, also the commission’s chairperson, attended the meeting.

The United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) spokesperson Khaing Thu Kha said in Mizzima's live broadcast about Cyclone Mocha that more than 70,000 people in Rakhine displaced by the cyclone have been evacuated to safer places.

In 2008, Myanmar was struck by Cyclone Nargis, which led to a total of 138,355 deaths and caused damage estimated up to $10 billion.

In 2008, the delay in sharing relevant information and slow spread of news during Cyclone Nargis resulted in many casualties as residents did not have sufficient time to evacuate. However, with Cyclone Mocha presently, people are anticipating reduced damages because of the prompt sharing of information and timely evacuation of residents.
