Rumour says two townships to be promoted as districts in Chin State

Paletwa and Tedim townships, the two most populous townships in Chin State, have reportedly been promoted to the district level.

After the chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC), which was formed by the military junta, said that they are making laws and regulations to implement the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system in the next general election to be held in 2023, news of the addition of two new districts is emerging.

"In the past, Matupi, Paletwa and Tedim townships have applied to be promoted at the district level, but only Matupi was promoted as district. But, district office buildings have not yet been completed in Matupi,” a retired district administrator told Mizzima. “It is good if Tedim and Paletwa will also be promoted as districts."

Some observers have guessed that the junta is promoting some townships into districts nationwide, and there are speculations that the election will be held using the PR electoral system.

Previously, there were 74 districts in regions and states nationwide, but according to current reports, as another 42 districts will be added, this would bring the total to 116.
