South Korea government is reportedly planning to build a Safe Zone on Thai-Burma border for refugees who are fleeing from conflict zone.

In telephone conversation between South Korea Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Don Pramudwinai made on April 30, they reportedly discussed this issue, South Korea media reported.

South Korea based Myanmar Democracy Network Office In-charge Yan Naing Tun said, “South Korea Foreign Minister told Thai Deputy PM in their phone meeting that they had a plan to build a Korea Safe Zone (KSZ) for Burmese refugees fleeing from conflict zones to Thai border similar to the camps they built in Turkey for the Syria war.”

South Korea government will spend billions of dollars that they usually spend in aid giving to Myanmar every year for Myanmar refugees in their KSZ project that will be executed soon.

“KSZ project will be led by the South Korea government. And also UN will call for suitable and competent persons for leading in appropriate sectors in this project,” Yan Naing Tun said.

In this KSZ project, the mobile shipping containers will be used for accommodations which will be arranged like a block in the city and then the refugees can use them.

“Their main objective is to build a refugee camp similar to the one they built in Turkey at a place where the logistics will be convenient along the area in Myawady-Maesod border as the safe zone. They informed Thai Deputy PM in their phone conversation,” Yan Naing Tun elaborated.

South Korea media reported that Thai Deputy PM welcomed this plan of South Korea’s assistance for Myanmar affairs and also he informed South Korea FM that Thai was ready to cooperate in this project.

For this Korea Safe Zone project, some ministers of the Myanmar National Unity Government (NUG), MPs of South Korea parliament, some South Korea based pro-democracy Myanmar leaders who oppose the military coup discussed in their online meetings and now they have reportedly started to commence this project.

South Korea FM Chung Eui-yong told Thai Deputy PM that his country gave support to the role of ASEAN played in resolving Myanmar crisis and they would effectively cooperate with ASEAN in implementing the 5-point consensus reached at the recent summit.
