US State Department official meets Myanmar UN envoy and NUG cabinet members

Derek Chollet, Counselor of the US Department of State, met with Kyaw Moe Tun, the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, and some members of the Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) on September 23.

During the discussion, the emphasis was placed on issues such as the need for a speedy return to democracy in Myanmar, rule of law, respect for human rights, inclusion of all ethnic and religious groups in resolving the political crisis, equality and other matters.

They also exchanged views on enhancing cooperation to assist the people of Myanmar in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Counselor Chollet acknowledged the leadership and measures of NUG government for the sake of the people of Myanmar while Myanmar faces horrific violence perpetrated by the junta forces.

In addition, he reaffirmed the United States is unwaveringly supporting all those working for a peaceful return to democracy in Myanmar.
