Water levels of Thanintharyi's Moekaung River rising

The water level of the Moekaung River in Thanintharyi Region's Miek Diistrict are continuing to rise due to heavy rains and could cause flooding, according to locals.

“Recent heavy rains caused the river level to rise. Some residents from lowland areas of the town are preparing for relocation", said a local.

Apparently, the river floods ever year, but the higher the waters the more damage the floods cause.

On 13 July at 8:00 a.m. the river water level rose to 13 feet and eight inches. It becomes a concern if the level rises to 17 feet and it is regarded as dangerous if it reaches 24 feet.

The NUG Ministry of Humanitarian affairs and Disaster Management said that Tanintharyi Region will likely see more rain, strong winds and high waves in the next few days.
