The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) leadership was warmly received by U Mahn Win Khaing Than, Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw at Hluttaw Reception Hall in Nay Pyi Taw on June 17, 2016.
The BACI senior leadership Executive Director Mr Elaisa Vahnie and Board Chair Dr Ro Ding congratulated Speaker U Mahn Win Khaing Than for a historic electoral victory and for the outstanding leadership that His Excellency is providing through the Parliamentarian in Myanmar, according to a press release from BACI received on June 18.
Further, the parties discussed the constitutional reform process and 21st Century Panlong Conference, and legal arrangements that might be required to support local capacity building and educational initiatives needed to prepare better the country’s future. They also underscore the legal protection and security concerns for over 250,000 Myanmar refugees and immigrants currently in Malaysia.
U Mahn Win Khaing Than who is also Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Assembly of the Union), Union of Myanmar, thanked the visiting members for the important work they have been doing the Myanmar community and for their willingness to contribute to the people of Myanmar and the country’s rebuilding process, and that he warmly welcome such initiative and that His Excellency is prepared to support any programme that is good for the country which serves the common interests of the people of Myanmar.
The BACI trip to Myanmar is as part of an effort to implement the outcome of the unprecedented U.S.-Myanmar Engagement Conference held on May 29, 2015 in Indianapolis which reached the six points consensus and common understanding, more specifically in light of the conference identification of lack of capacity in the country as a significant challenge; therefore, calls for further support in an effort to increase resources that invest in people and education through economic development that builds local institutional capacity and fosters freedom and more equitable prosperity.
