Local Myanmar media are reporting concern over alleged problems over aid delivery to Cyclone Mocha victims over 10 days after the storm hit Rakhine State.

Rakhine Communications Hub, tracking developments, cites Narinjara saying on 25 May that no aid from the military government or international community has arrived for many cyclone-affected families. The devastated Rakhine people are waiting for aid from Thailand, India, and other ASEAN nations, they note.

A large number of items, donated by the international community for the cyclone-affected Rakhine people, have arrived in Yangon, but have apparently not been transported to Rakhine State yet, Narinjara notes.

India and Thailand have sent humanitarian supplies that have arrived in Yangon but have yet to be sent to Rakhine State, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Development Media Group reported on 24 May that the local authorities have banned the collection of donations led by social workers in Kyaukphyu Township to provide emergency support to the people affected by the cyclone in Rakhine State.

About 70 people, including representatives of more than 30 community-based organisations and monks from Kyaukphyu Township, held a meeting on 21 May to organise support for those in need in all affected townships in Rakhine State, but when they approached the authorities for permission, they were denied.

According to the report, the people affected by the cyclone urgently need support from local and international donors to have access to food, shelter, drinking water, and medicine. Local philanthropists said that Kyaukphyu-based social organisations want to help the people affected by the storm, but if they collect donations without permission, they may face a situation where they will be prosecuted.
