State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi under the arrest of military junta and Chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council Dr Myo Aung were seen in prison uniforms at their trials that took place at a special court in Zabuthiri Township in the capital on 17 December, according to the sources close to the court proceedings.

The sources told Mizzima that the state counsellor wore a white-coloured traditional blouse and a traditional sarong in blue colour which were reportedly arranged by prison officials.

During the court proceeding on Friday, only one case was discussed concerning the land lease for the establishment of the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, dedicated to the name of Myanmar democracy icon’s late mother, on University Revenue Road in Yangon. It is one of the five corruption charges against the State Counsellor under Section 55. A court hearing for other cases is scheduled to be held on 7 January.

At the trial, former Yangon Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein and former Yangon Government Minister Nilar Kyaw presented their testimonies to Chief Judge Myint San of Mandalay Region High Court.

In addition to court hearings behind closed doors, the details of the testimonies remain unknown as her legal team is prohibited under Section 144 not to disclose the development of trials.

President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were sentenced to four years imprisonment on 6 December—two years for Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code, and two years for Section 25 of the Disaster Management Law.

The sentence was reduced from four to two years on the instruction of Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.

The ousted 76-year-old State Counsellor faces a total of 12 charges and if found guilty she could spend the rest of her life in jail or under house arrest.
