Explosion at house of NLD’s former Mandalay Chief Minister

A bomb exploded in front of the home of the former Mandalay Chief Minister, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, in Mandalay City’s Amarapura Township at around 10:00 p.m. on 8 May.

Prior to the military coup, NLD member Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was the Mandalay Chief Minister.

A few minutes prior to that explosion, junta soldiers detonated a bomb that had been found in the compound of Dr. Zaw Myint Maung’s sister-in-law, also in Amarapura Township.

A resident of Amarapura Township said to Mizzima: “A bomb was discovered in the yard of Dr. Zaw Myint Maung’s relative last night [8 May]. Soldiers from the Military Council arrived and detonated the bomb. Another bomb exploded in front of Dr. Zaw Myint Maung’s house. There were frequent explosions in Amarapura Township that night.”

Neither house was damaged by the blasts, according to locals. At least three explosions were heard that night, but the location of the other explosions is currently unknown.

Some pro-military Telegram pages said that Mandalay urban guerrilla forces had attacked NLD party supporters with homemade bombs.

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was arrested on the day of the coup, 1 February 2021. He was later sentenced to 26 years in prison and is currently in Mandalay’s Obo Prison. He was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2019.
