Flooding in Rakhine's Kyaukphyu Township

Heavy rain has flooded low-lying wards in Rakhine State's Kyaukphyu Township, according to local residents.

It started raining heavily at about 11:00 p.m. on 15 August and water levels began rising and flooding low lying areas at about 1:00 a.m. 

Japan Gyi, the chairman of the Lay Wadi Rescue Organisation said: "In Thamanchaung Ward where we had to rescue people as the water rose by about six feet. It rose by more than four feet in the other locations."

According to local reports evacuated residents were given shelter at No. 4 Middle School.

The wards that flooded were: SapalMwae, Thamanchaung, Ayarshi, Zayditaung and No. 4 ward.
