Former US Ambassador to Myanmar Scot Marciel has called for support for Myanmar's resistance fighting against a "bloodthirsty" military junta.

Writing in the United States Institute of Peace on 22 August under the headline, “It’s Time to Help Myanmar’s Resistance Prevail - The country’s brutal coup regime is no candidate for political compromise,” Mr Marciel has called for the backing of a national uprising.

"This is not a typical power struggle between two rival political communities. It is a national uprising against a hated, corrupt and bloodthirsty military that has waged war against ethnic minority communities for decades, committed genocide against the Rohingya population, and is now operating with a brutality and cruelty not seen in Southeast Asia since the Khmer Rouge."
