Junta orders bus companies to record passengers' information

The junta has ordered bus companies operating long-distance bus services across Myanmar to record passengers' information before selling them tickets, according to an 18 August statement from the junta Department of Transport.

According to the statement, bus company ticket offices have to record the name, phone number, National Registration Card (NRC) numbers and seat number of all passengers. They will only be allowed to take their seats after their ticket and NRC have been checked and shown to correspond with the bus company's records.

"This is not the first time, they’ve been asking for the passengers’ information. Before, we gave our phone number and address to the ticket office. But, this is the first time that the junta has released an official statement saying that passengers’ information must be recorded. It seems like they want to put more pressure on people", said a passenger who has frequently used long-distance buses since the coup.

There is tight security and many junta checkpoints on highways throughout Myanmar.

On 19 August, a Thit Sar Oo bus running from Yangon to Ye-U Town was checked by junta troops near Yay-O Zin Village in Monywa Township. Weapons including an M4 carbine were seized. The Junta arrested the driver and conductor of the bus and two clerks working at the Thit sar Oo bus stop in the Yangon long-distance bus terminus, according to people who work at the terminus.
